I'm A Celebrity: Lembit Opik and Shaun Ryder bitten by snakes during immunity challenge

By Daily Mail Reporter

Hard as nails: Shaun Ryder remained calm as the snake bit him and wouldn't let go in tonight's episode of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

For the first time in the show's history, not one, but two contestants were bitten by a snake on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

Former MP Lembit Opik and singer Shaun Ryder both drew blood after a young
Australian carpet python sank his teeth into their hands during an overnight task.

The snake nipped Lembit first, but by the time it got to Shaun it was really angry and sank his teeth deep into the Happy Mondays frontman.

Ouch: The young Australian carpet python is unimpressed with the intruder and sinks his teeth into Shaun's hand

After the snake started wrapping itself around Shaun's hand, two medics rushed over to remove the snake.

It was then decided to remove the snake from the trial and replace it with a box of rhino beetles.

There were 10 keys for each contestant split between the two boxes, which would open the various padlocks keeping them in their cells.

Shaun ended up with the worst injuries of the two, but surprised his fellow 'prisoners' with his calm reaction.

On the attack: The python then started wrapping its body around Shaun's hand, before being removed by two medics

Feeling the pain: The look on Lembit Opik's face says it all as the snake nips his hand

'Searing pain': Lembit claimed he had a high pain threshold, but was tested to the limit during the snake bite

Take a bite: The python nipped Lembit first

He showed his hardman credentials by saying: 'Oh you dirty b******, I will pull you out and...' when he was first bitten by the creature.

His fellow prisoners Stacey Solomon, Dom Joly and Lembit didn't realise he'd been bitten until they saw the medics rushing past their prison cells.

When they asked Shaun how he was, he replied: 'Alright. It’s a bite, a snake bite. If that weren’t someone’s animal I would have f***ing smashed it.

'It was like sticking your hand through a sheet of glass and it wouldn’t let go. It took two of them to get the thing off.'

Medical help: Shaun's wound was quickly cleaned up and bandaged by the medics

Can't be bothered: By the following morning, an injured Shaun couldn't sum up the energy to attempt to win the task

Dom was amazed by Shaun's reaction: 'I was in my cage and all of a sudden these medics rushed past and at that point I thought "I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here right now!"

'I didn’t hear Shaun in pain but looked and saw he had his hand out through the bars of his cage with blood over it.'

Despite his bite, Lembit did manage to be the first to complete the overnight task and won immunity from the public vote - which saw Sheryl Gascoigne being the first to leave.

Lembit has already got five keys out of the box of rats and four keys out of the snake box, when the python bit his finger.

Uncertainty: Dom Joly looked uneasy as he puts his hand into one of the boxes

Keep your distance: Dom managed to retrieve all five keys from a box of rhino beetles, which were brought in to replace the angry python

After his finger was bandaged up, Lembit opined: 'I’ve come to realise since being here that me and snakes doesn’t work but I thought I’ve just got to get those keys.

'I seem to have a fairly high threshold for pain but it was a searing pain.'
Originally Lembit and Shaun were two of six 'prisoners' taking part in the trial, along with Dom, Stacey, Sheryl and Gillian McKeith.

Shortly after being locked away, both Sheryl and Gillian said 'I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here', saying they didn't care about going up for the public vote.

Girl power: Stacey Solomon was the only girl to complete the overnight task after Sheryl Gascoigne and Gillian McKeith chickened out

Soon after Gillian went, Shaun and Dom mocked the nutritionist, with Shaun saying: 'She looks like she's been dead three years.'

Dom hit back: 'She looks like she's been exhumed for the show.'

Stacey and Dom ended up completing the box section of the task after the snake was swapped for the beetles.

But after spending the night sleeping in the cells, the contestants then had to find the remaining keys in a bowl of porridge.

Freedom: Lembit is first out as finding the remainder of his keys in the porridge

While Shaun couldn't be bothered as he recovered from his shark bite, a desperate Lembit quickly found all his keys and jubilantly escaped.

The overnight fight for immunity came after Stacey and rapper Aggro Santos dressed up like the Mario Bros for the Super Scario bushtucker trial.

The pair would have to cross a walkway, suspended 18 metres high and release floating stars, with each one worth one meal.

Joined to together by a magnetic tether, they would have to stick together working as a team to ensure that the tether does not come apart otherwise, each time, they would lose a meal for camp.

After dressing in dungarees and putting on a fake moustache, Stacey joked: 'I think I might grow my own (moustache).'

At the skinniest part of the task, where they had to edge across a thin plank of wood, Aggro admitted he was losing his nerve, but praised Stacey for 'helping me keep it together right now'.

They ended the trial with the terrifying leap of faith, where they crashed through a wall before flying through the air to complete all 12 stars.

Hold tight: Aggro and Stacey were preventing from hurtling to the ground by their safety harnesses

Also on last night's show, Gillian was rumbled by the show's producers for sneaking in contraband items into camp.

show bosses were then alerted that Gillian, whose increasingly erratic behaviour has sparked concern in recent days, had more banned goods when Stacey Solomon asked her for 'special stuff' to go in her lunch.

Gillian was then spotted fishing around in her bag, causing producers to demand all contestants to hand over anything they are not allowed to bring into the jungle.

Rumbled: Gillian seemed pleased with herself after it took producers so long to discover the contraband food items she had smuggled in

The 51-year-old TV personality then brazenly revealed her haul, which consisted of five pouches Japanese miso soup powder, eight stock cubes and assorted bags of cumin, celery and garlic, rock salt and herbs.

She was searched before entering the jungle and had a garlic bulb confiscated - but the rest of her stash was missed.

Gillian, who bizarrely claimed to be pregnant in a bid to escape jungle jail earlier this week, bragged: 'I smuggled it all in my knickers.

'I have a small bottom and I just grew it a bit when I came in here. I had special pockets in my Marks & Spencer knickers.

'They are special knickers with secret pockets that I made myself with the purpose of smuggling seasoning in.'
