Wayne Rooney cancels £90,000 birthday bash as he quits Britain for Dubai break with Coleen

Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen secretly jetted off to Dubai last night, cancelling his £90,000 birthday bash.

The footballer pulled the plug on his lavish 25th birthday party despite already spending thousands on food and drink.

A marquee erected at their luxury £4.5million home in Cheshire will be unused as they unwind on a five-day break.

The £10,000 trip comes after a torrid week which saw the England star almost ditch his club Manchester United.

All is forgiven - perhaps: Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney posing together after he signed a new deal

He stunned the footballing world by declaring that the club no longer matched his ambition and criticised the quality of his fellow players.

He left fans boiling with rage and prompted death threats by also saying he would be happy to sign for arch-rivals Manchester City.

Eventually, after an incredible U-turn, the stand-off ended and he clinched a new deal with United - doubling his weekly salary to £200,000.

He and Sir Alex Ferguson posed for a saccharine picture with their arms around each others shoulders to show they had buried the hatchet.

The contract makes the 25-year-old the highest-paid English footballer of all time. Rooney was then forced to apologise to his team and the fans.

Wife Coleen, 24, rang around the 100 guests they had invited to his birthday to cancel and they packed their bags for a last-minute holiday.

They left their one-year-old son Kai behind with her parents and it is thought they will reschedule the party for next weekend instead.

Rooney, who is currently injured, asked permission from Sir Alex to go on the trip and the Manchester United manager gave it his full backing.

The couple only recently returned from a brief trip to Prague in what was billed a 'second honeymoon' to patch up their marriage.

Just weeks ago, prostitute Jennifer Thompson claimed she was paid £1,200 for sex with Rooney while his wife Coleen was five months pregnant prompted her to quit their family home for several days.

Protest: A mob of Manchester United supporters outside Rooney's home on Thursday night

The Rooneys indulged in Champagne on their Emirates flight from Manchester Airport and snuggled in £4,000 private booths, according to the Sunday Mirror.

They reportedly ate cake and Pringles while watching teen film Rising Stars and then tucked into tomato soup and duck, washed down by white wine.

The pair are believed to be staying at the seven-star Burj Al Arab hotel - where rooms cost a staggering £1,200-a-night.

It is the same hotel where fellow England star John Terry took his wife Toni after allegations that he had an affair with Vanessa Perroncel.

Rooney had apparently wanted to move to Real Madrid, where his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo earns £250,000-a-week and pays less tax.

But the idea was forbidden by wife Coleen's family who made clear a move away from the North West was unacceptable - limiting him to United or City.

While he considered his options, a mob of baying fans surrounded his house and graffiti in Manchester declared 'Join City and you're dead'.

The footballing world has expressed astonishment at his eventual change of heart - with one veteran saying his head had been turned by cash.

Sammy McIlroy, who played for Manchester United 342 times between 1971 and 1982, said: ‘People on his side have put figures in front of him, that’s the reason he did it.

‘They’ve put words in his mouth - the statements from him were a load of rubbish.
Alex Stepney, United’s goalkeeper when they won the European Cup in 1968, said: ‘Loyalty has gone out of the game, unfortunately.

‘Ever since agents have been on the scene, they’ve wanted to move players on, but I would think Rooney probably feels he’s been given wrong advice this week.’
